What is an LED strip light used for?

Strip lights handle plain, functional lighting where looks don't matter but coverage does. They light garages, stairwells, corridors, and storage rooms with broad, even output. Mounted in rows, they cover large utility areas at low cost per fixture. Unlike a high bay, a strip light suits lower ceilings under 20 feet, spreading light wide rather than throwing it down.

What length and wattage strip light do I need?

Match length to the run and wattage to the space. A 4-foot strip at 40 to 50 watts covers a single bay or short corridor. An 8-foot strip at 70 to 90 watts spans longer aisles in one piece. For continuous coverage, link strips end to end on one circuit. LED strips run about 130 lumens per watt, so compare lumen output when sizing for a target brightness.

What does an IP66 rating mean on a strip light?

The rating tells you where the fixture can go. An IP66 strip light is sealed against dust and powerful water jets, so it survives washdowns, damp basements, and covered outdoor areas. A standard strip is for clean, dry indoor spaces only. The two digits cover solids then liquids — 6 for dust-tight, 6 for high-pressure water. Match the rating to the moisture and dust the fixture will face.

How are LED strip lights mounted?

Mounting follows the ceiling type. A strip light surface-mounts directly to a ceiling or wall with screws for a flush fit. For open ceilings, suspend it on chain or aircraft cable at the height you need. Fixtures wire through knockouts and link together for a continuous run. Confirm the mounting hardware is included or ordered separately before install.

Are LED strip lights dimmable and selectable?

Most commercial strip lights offer both. A 0-10V dimmable driver sets output and pairs with occupancy sensors to save energy in low-traffic areas. A selectable-CCT model switches between 3500K, 4000K, and 5000K with an onboard toggle. Some add a wattage-selectable switch to tune brightness at install.
