Low-Voltage Landscape Transformers
Low-voltage landscape transformers power compatible path, accent, well, step, and other outdoor lighting by converting line voltage to the low-voltage supply required by the fixture system. Choose transformer capacity from the total connected fixture wattage, then confirm output voltage, AC or DC compatibility, and primary input voltage. For longer cable runs, consider a compatible multi-tap transformer and plan voltage-drop compensation before installation. Timer, photocell, zoning, enclosure, and control options can then be matched to the project's operating requirements.

About Low-Voltage Landscape Transformers
How to Choose a Low-Voltage Landscape Transformer for LED Lighting
A low-voltage landscape transformer should be selected around the connected fixtures, the cable layout, and the available electrical supply. LED systems often need less capacity than older halogen installations, but lower wattage does not eliminate voltage drop or fixture compatibility requirements. Start with the actual load, then compare transformer output, input voltage, enclosure suitability, and control options. The product grid can help you narrow the choices once those requirements are clear.
Size the Transformer Using Watts and VA, Not Fixture Count
List the landscape lighting fixtures you plan to use before choosing a transformer. Add the rated wattage of each lamp or integrated fixture and check whether the manufacturer also specifies volt-amperes (VA) for sizing. When VA is provided, use the manufacturer's recommended method rather than assuming watts and VA are interchangeable for every LED load.
For example, twelve 5-watt fixtures add up to 60 watts of connected load. That does not automatically call for a 300-watt transformer. Select a model whose permitted continuous loading covers the design, with an allowance for any planned expansion. An approximately 20% reserve is common guidance, but the transformer's own ratings and installation instructions take priority.
Calculate Voltage Drop for Each Cable Run
Voltage drop depends on conductor length, wire gauge, and current on the run. An 80-foot cable feeding a handful of low-wattage path lights is a different electrical problem from the same cable length carrying a much heavier group of fixtures. Distance alone cannot tell you whether the farthest fixture will receive adequate voltage.
LED retrofits commonly reduce current compared with the halogen systems they replace, which can reduce voltage drop. Still, do not choose thinner cable or extend a run without checking the load and the fixture's allowable input range. Estimate the drop during planning, then confirm delivered voltage at representative fixtures after installation.
Choose Multi-Tap Outputs From Measurements, Not Guesswork
Some landscape transformers provide several AC output taps, such as 12V, 13V, 14V, and 15V. A higher tap can compensate for losses along a long cable, but it can also put excessive voltage on fixtures close to the transformer. More voltage is not automatically better.
Check the selected fixture's acceptable operating range and use the transformer's installation instructions to choose an initial tap. With the system operating under its intended load, a qualified installer can measure voltage near the beginning and end of each run. Move to a higher compatible tap only when the measured drop justifies it. A fixture that specifies DC input also needs a suitable DC supply; do not treat AC and DC outputs as interchangeable.
Match the Wiring Layout and Accessories to the Load
The way cables branch matters almost as much as the transformer rating. A single daisy-chain run is straightforward, but later fixtures can see lower voltage as the shared cable carries the load. A T-shaped layout divides the circuit into branches, while a hub arrangement can make connections easier to organize and inspect. Neither method guarantees identical voltage without checking cable lengths and loading.
- Daisy chain: A simple route when the connected load and run length are modest.
- Branched or T layout: Useful when fixtures lie in two directions from a central cable route.
- Hub layout: Concentrates fixture connections at a planned distribution point.
For supporting installation components, check landscape lighting accessories and confirm the selected items suit the cable type, location, and exposure. Do not assume every connector is approved for direct burial or wet conditions.
Magnetic vs. Electronic Transformers: Check Fixture and Control Compatibility
Magnetic transformers use a core and windings, while electronic supplies convert power through electronic circuitry. Their size, output characteristics, load requirements, and compatibility with LED fixtures can differ. The correct choice begins with the fixture manufacturer's specified voltage and output type, not simply which transformer is smaller.
Dimming deserves separate attention. Magnetic-low-voltage (MLV) and electronic-low-voltage (ELV) dimmers are intended for different compatible loads, and many landscape transformers are not designed for ordinary line-side dimming. If dimming is part of the project, verify the exact transformer, fixture, and control combination before purchasing.
Choose an Outdoor Enclosure and Mounting Location
Outdoor equipment must be suitable for the conditions where it will be installed. Check the transformer's documented environmental rating, mounting orientation, required clearances, and installation instructions. A sheltered wall, exposed garden post, and coastal installation can place very different demands on the enclosure and its hardware.
Stainless-steel and coated housings are available in the category, but material alone does not prove that a model is suitable for every wet or corrosive environment. Keep terminations accessible and follow the manufacturer's placement and ventilation requirements. Confirm the electrical connection method before ordering; a plug-in unit and a hardwired unit may have different installation requirements.
Confirm 120V or 277V Primary Input Before Ordering
The primary voltage is the building-side supply; the secondary voltage is what the transformer delivers to the landscape fixtures. Most residential projects use a 120V supply, while some commercial lighting systems use 277V. Lumera's transformer listings include models identified for different input requirements, so do not choose by secondary voltage alone.
If a site provides 277V, select a transformer expressly rated for that input. A 120V-only product cannot be substituted unless its published input range also covers the supply. If the project needs associated upstream equipment, review Power & Distribution for the appropriate supply-side product families, then check all equipment against the circuit design and local requirements.
Timers, Photocells, and Multiple Lighting Areas
Decide how the lights should operate before selecting controls. A timer uses a programmed schedule, while a photocell responds to ambient light. Some transformer products incorporate controls; others accept optional accessories. Check the listing to establish what is included, what must be ordered separately, and what is electrically compatible.
One transformer can supply multiple cable runs if its capacity and terminal arrangement permit it. That does not mean each output can turn on and off independently. If a driveway, path, and planting bed need different schedules, confirm that the selected unit provides independently controlled zones or plan the appropriate separate controls.
Check the System Before Commissioning
Before installation, record the fixture load, output type, primary voltage, cable lengths, conductor sizes, and required controls. Follow the equipment instructions and applicable electrical code for outdoor wiring, grounding, overcurrent protection, and any required ground-fault protection. Hardwired line-voltage connections should be handled by a qualified electrician.
Once the system is energized safely, confirm voltage at fixtures along each run while the lights are on. The readings should fall within the fixture manufacturer's acceptable range. Also inspect accessible connections and test timer or photocell operation. These checks are more useful than assuming a transformer with a higher rating will solve every wiring problem.
Low-Voltage Landscape Transformer FAQs
What size transformer do I need for LED landscape lights?
Add the rated load of all fixtures that will be powered by the transformer, using VA where the manufacturer calls for it. Choose a unit with enough permitted capacity for that load and any planned additions. For twelve 5W fixtures, the connected wattage is 60W; the final transformer size still depends on the product's loading instructions and the wiring plan.
Do LED landscape lights still need a multi-tap transformer?
They can, especially when longer runs or heavier connected loads produce meaningful voltage drop. LEDs generally reduce the current compared with similar halogen installations, but there is no universal cable-length limit that makes extra taps unnecessary. Calculate the expected drop and confirm voltage under load before deciding whether additional output taps will be useful.
Should I use the 12V or 15V transformer tap?
Use the tap that keeps every connected fixture within its approved operating-voltage range under normal load. The higher tap is intended to compensate for measured loss in suitable installations, not to boost brightness indiscriminately. Check readings at both the nearest and farthest fixtures, then follow the transformer and fixture manufacturers' directions for any adjustment.
Can a 277V landscape transformer connect to a 120V circuit?
Not unless its published primary-input rating explicitly includes 120V. Models designed only for 277V must not be assumed to work on a standard 120V supply, and the reverse is also true. Match the site's voltage to the exact catalog number before ordering, especially when similar-looking transformer models are offered for different input voltages.
Can one landscape transformer feed separate zones?
Yes. A transformer may support several cable runs when its terminals and rated capacity allow them. However, separate outputs do not necessarily mean separately scheduled zones. Independent switching requires controls or a transformer model designed for that function. Check the electrical load on every run and confirm which control features the actual product supports.
What is the difference between magnetic and electronic landscape transformers?
Magnetic designs step down voltage through windings and a magnetic core; electronic designs use switching circuitry. They may differ in size, output waveform, load requirements, and dimming compatibility. Neither type should be treated as universally compatible with every LED landscape fixture. Verify the fixture's required AC or DC input and the control method before selecting either design.
