What do the PAR numbers mean — PAR16, PAR20, PAR30, PAR38?

The number is the bulb's diameter in eighths of an inch. A PAR16 is two inches across, small and used in compact track heads. A PAR20 is 2.5 inches for accent and smaller recessed cans. A PAR30 at 3.75 inches is the versatile mid-size for track and general recessed. A PAR38 is the largest at 4.75 inches, the brightest, for high ceilings and outdoor flood. What's the difference between a spot and a flood PAR bulb?

Beam angle sets how wide the light spreads. A spot (narrow beam, roughly 10 to 25 degrees) concentrates light to highlight art, signage, or a single feature. A flood (wider beam, 40 degrees and up) spreads light for general and wall lighting. A narrow flood sits between them for track over a counter. Match the beam to the distance and the object — the farther the target, the narrower the beam.

What's the difference between PAR30 short neck and long neck?

PAR30 comes in two neck lengths for different fixtures. A short neck (PAR30S) fits shallow recessed cans and track heads where depth is tight. A long neck (PAR30L) extends further to seat properly in deeper housings and reach past a trim. They share the same face diameter, so check the fixture depth to know which neck you need.

Are LED PAR bulbs dimmable and rated for outdoors?

Most are both, but confirm per bulb. A dimmable PAR bulb works with standard LED dimmers, though compatibility varies — check the model's dimmer list. A wet-rated PAR bulb handles outdoor flood and covered exterior use, sealed against moisture. For enclosed outdoor fixtures, verify the bulb is rated for enclosed and wet locations so heat and water don't shorten its life.

What base do PAR bulbs use, and will they fit my fixture?

Standard PAR bulbs use a medium screw base. A PAR20, PAR30, and PAR38 use an E26 medium base — the same as a regular household bulb — so they thread into most track, recessed, and lamp holders.
