What are the main types of electrical conduit?
Five conduit types cover most installations. EMT (thin-wall) is the most common indoor raceway. Rigid (RMC) and IMC are heavy-wall threaded conduit for harsh or outdoor runs. What's the difference between a coupling, connector, and bushing?
Each fitting joins a different point. A coupling joins two lengths of conduit together. A connector joins conduit to a box or enclosure. A bushing threads onto the end to protect wire insulation from the cut edge. Locknuts secure threaded connectors to the box.
What's the difference between set-screw and compression EMT fittings?
The connection method sets the rating. Set-screw fittings tighten a screw against the conduit and suit dry, indoor locations. Compression fittings clamp a ring around the conduit for a raintight seal in damp, wet, and concrete applications. Compression costs more but passes wet-location inspection.
What is a conduit body (LB, LL, T)?
A conduit body is an access fitting at a bend or junction that lets you pull and splice wire. Letters mark the opening direction: LB pulls behind the wall, LL and LR turn left or right, T splits three ways, and C runs straight through. A removable cover seals the opening.
What fittings does liquid-tight flexible conduit need?
Liquid-tight flexible conduit uses sealing connectors with a gland and O-ring that grip the jacket and keep moisture out. Connectors come in straight, 45-degree, and 90-degree angles, in steel or non-metallic. Match the connector to the conduit's trade size and the wet or outdoor location rating.
