Choose Wiring Devices by Circuit and Application

A wiring device is part of the electrical system, so selection begins with system voltage, branch-circuit rating, grounding, configuration, mounting method, location, and the specific function the device must perform. Product families that look similar can have different ratings, wiring methods, and intended uses.

Receptacles and GFCI Devices

Choose receptacles by voltage, amperage, configuration, grade, grounding, and any project-specific feature. GFCI devices add ground-fault protection for applications where it is required or specified. The applicable code, occupancy, circuit, and location determine where that protection is needed.

Locking and Industrial Connections

Twist-lock devices use locking configurations that must match the circuit and mating device. Pin-and-sleeve devices use a separate industrial connection system with their own current, voltage, pole, keying, grounding, and environmental requirements. Neither should be selected by amperage alone.

Floor Boxes, Wall Plates, and Lugs Complete the Installation

Floor boxes coordinate the box, device mounting, cover, and finished-floor interface. Wall plates should match the gang count and device opening, while lugs must match conductor and equipment requirements. These accessories are part of the installed system, not interchangeable trim items.

Before ordering, verify the device, box, cover or plate, conductor range, terminal method, environmental rating, and any accessory required by the manufacturer. This is especially important for weather-exposed, industrial, high-current, or multi-component assemblies.
