A smart dimmer has to succeed at three separate jobs at once. It has to dim the connected load cleanly, which is the same compatibility problem every dimmer has. It has to communicate reliably. And it has to power its own electronics continuously. Any one of those failing produces a device that technically works and nobody is happy with.
The Dimming Method Still Comes First
Adding a radio does not change the underlying physics. A smart dimmer dims by a specific method, and the driver in the fixture has to accept that method. A control built for phase dimming works with LED lamps and fixtures marked as compatible with it. This is the single most common source of complaints on a finished smart lighting install, and the app is often blamed for it. If a light flickers, buzzes, drops out at the bottom of the range, or refuses to go fully dark, the problem is almost always the dimmer and driver pairing rather than the network. Minimum Load and Small LED Circuits
Dimmers have a minimum load as well as a maximum, and modern LED circuits routinely fall under it. A single low-wattage fixture may draw too little for a dimmer to regulate, which shows up as flicker, a dead zone at the bottom, or lights that will not come on at a low setting. How the device communicates affects reliability more than any feature does. A hub-based system runs its devices on a dedicated radio and uses a small bridge on the network to reach the internet. That keeps every dimmer off the household Wi-Fi, which matters once the device count climbs, and it generally holds up better in a house full of connected equipment.
A hub-free system connects each device straight to Wi-Fi with no bridge to buy or configure. It is simpler for a handful of devices and puts one more client on the router for every dimmer installed. For a few rooms, either approach works. For a whole house or a commercial floor, a hub-based system is usually easier to service and less prone to devices dropping off. Powering the Device Itself
A smart dimmer runs its radio and processor continuously, even with the light off, which means it needs a constant power source. Nearly all models draw that from a neutral conductor present in the switch box. New construction almost always has one. Homes wired before roughly the mid-1980s frequently do not, because the neutral was landed at the fixture rather than pulled through the switch loop.
Pull the existing device and look before ordering: a bundle of white conductors capped together at the back of the box is the neutral. If there is none, either a no-neutral model or new wire is required, and a no-neutral device is a distinct product rather than a setting.
Multi-Location Control Without Travelers
Wireless dimmers handle three-way and multi-point control differently from mechanical ones, and it is a genuine improvement. Rather than running a traveler conductor to a second switch box, most systems pair one powered dimmer with a battery-operated companion that communicates wirelessly. That companion can mount on a wall with no box behind it, clip beside a bed, or sit loose on a table.

The features that earn their cost are the ones that run without anyone touching them. Schedules tied to sunrise and sunset offsets keep exterior and evening lighting correct through the whole year, where a fixed clock time drifts badly by season. Scenes set several circuits at once from one press, which is the difference between a system people use and one they ignore. When a Simpler Device Is the Right Call
