Grounding & Bonding

Grounding is where inspectors look first - a service that isn't grounded and bonded correctly is a shock and fire hazard. The NEC is specific: a driven electrode, a properly sized electrode conductor, and listed fittings at every joint. Most jobs begin with copper-bonded rods and the clamps that anchor the conductor, then add bonding jumpers and bus bars to tie metal parts together. How deep does a ground rod go, and how many are required?

Eight feet — a ground rod is driven its full length into the soil, in contact with earth the whole way. One rod rarely passes on its own: two rods set at least 6 feet apart are standard, unless a single rod measures 25 ohms or less to ground. The rule lives in NEC 250.53.

Is a ground rod solid copper, and what size?

Despite the name, standard ground rods are copper-bonded steel, not solid copper — a steel core takes the sledgehammer, and the bonded copper skin fights corrosion. The everyday size is 5/8 inch by 8 feet. Where soil chemistry demands it, galvanized or stainless rods step in. The conductor to the rod can be as small as #6 copper.

How do you bond the grounding conductor to the rod?

The connection has to be made with a clamp listed for the rod and the soil, never a plumbing clamp pressed into service. Buried connections call specifically for a direct-burial (acorn) clamp stamped for earth contact. Bronze and copper-alloy clamps hold up best where moisture sits. A loose or wrong clamp is a classic inspection fail.

Does a subpanel need its own ground rod?

Usually not. A subpanel in the same building shares the main panel's grounding electrode — you run a separate equipment ground, keep the neutral and ground bars apart, and drive no new rods. The exception is a detached building, which does need its own grounding electrode under NEC 250.32. That trips up a lot of garage and shop feeds.

What's the actual difference between grounding and bonding?

They get used interchangeably, but they're two jobs. Grounding ties the system to the earth through an electrode, holding voltage to a reference. Bonding ties metal parts to each other so a fault has a low-resistance path back and breakers trip fast. The wire to the rod is the grounding electrode conductor; the straps between enclosures are bonding jumpers.

What is an intersystem bonding bridge?

It's the small bonding bar that ties cable TV, phone, and satellite grounds to the building's electrode — so every low-voltage system shares one ground instead of fighting for its own. NEC 250.94 requires one at the meter or service on new work. It gives installers at least three accessible terminals to land on. Older homes often lack it.
