Choosing a Standard Light Switch

A standard mechanical switch is often the simplest control when the project does not need dimming, sensors, or connected features. Start with the circuit arrangement and device rating, then choose toggle, rocker, decorator, or designer styling to match the room and wall plate.

Single-Pole, 3-Way, and 4-Way

A single-pole switch controls a load from one location. A 3-way switching arrangement controls the same load from two locations. A 4-way device is used between the 3-way switches when control is needed from three or more locations. Confirm the wiring diagram for the exact device instead of replacing switches by terminal count alone.

Mechanical vs. Electronic Requirements

Many basic mechanical switches do not use a neutral conductor at the switch, but smart, electronic, illuminated, timer, or sensor controls may. If the project is moving beyond simple mechanical switching, compare smart switches, dimmers, or occupancy sensors.

Match Voltage and Load Type

Use the switch only within its marked voltage and current ratings and for the load types it supports. A device labeled for a low-voltage control circuit is not a substitute for a line-voltage switch. Motor and ceiling-fan loads can have additional rating requirements; use fan controls when speed control or fan-specific switching is required.

Finish the Device With the Correct Wall Plate

Match the opening style and gang count to the installed switch. The wall plates collection includes toggle, decorator, blank, and combination layouts for finished installations.
