A flood light throws a much wider, brighter beam across large areas like lots and building faces. How does dusk-to-dawn security lighting work?

A built-in sensor runs the fixture for you. A photocell reads ambient light and switches the fixture on at dark, then off at dawn — no timer or switch needed. It gives all-night coverage for entrances and perimeters where you want constant light. Many models add a selectable mode so you can choose dusk-to-dawn, motion, or both.

Should I choose a motion sensor or dusk-to-dawn model?

It depends on whether you want constant or on-demand light. Dusk-to-dawn stays lit all night, best for steady visibility and predictable areas. Motion activation triggers only on movement, saving energy and creating a startle effect that deters intruders. A combination model runs dim dusk-to-dawn, then jumps to full output on motion — the most flexible choice.

How many watts and lumens does a security light need?

Match output to the area, not the wall. A 20-watt security light at about 1,900 lumens covers a doorway, side yard, or single-car drive. A 30 to 40-watt fixture at 2,800 lumens or more lights a wider yard or two-car area. Selectable-CCT models let you pick 3000K warm, 4000K neutral, or 5000K cool for the look and visibility you want.

Where should security lights be mounted?

Placement decides how well they work. Mount a security light 8 to 10 feet high, above door and window reach, angled to cover the approach without glare into windows. Cover entry points, garage doors, and dark corners where an intruder would pass. For motion models, aim the sensor across the path of travel, not straight at it, for the earliest trigger.
