Grounding and bonding are related but distinct functions. Grounding connects a system to earth or another reference as required; bonding creates electrical continuity between conductive parts so fault-current paths perform as intended. The correct connector depends on where that connection is being made and what materials are being joined.
Match the Connector to the Conductor and Surface
Check the permitted conductor size range, copper or aluminum compatibility, number of conductors, mounting surface, and environmental rating. A connector's color or appearance is not enough to establish suitability. For pipe and electrode connections, compare ground clamps; for equipment terminations, see lugs.
Bonding Bushings and Raceway Connections
Bushings can protect conductors at raceway entries, while grounding or bonding bushings provide additional connection provisions for specific bonding applications. Use them where the wiring method, equipment, product listing, or applicable rules require that function.
Material Compatibility and Corrosion
Outdoor, underground, concrete-encased, or corrosive locations can change the required connector material and protection method. Verify whether the product is suitable for direct burial, concrete, wet locations, or dissimilar-metal contact as applicable. Do not assume that a connector approved for one grounding electrode or conductor material is automatically approved for another.
Installation Details Matter
Follow the manufacturer's conductor preparation, mounting, and torque instructions. Grounding and bonding performance can be compromised by incorrect conductor size, loose hardware, unsuitable surfaces, or incompatible materials. For system-level equipment such as transformers and surge protection, treat grounding and bonding as part of the complete electrical design rather than a stand-alone accessory decision.
