A recessed housing is the metal canister that mounts inside a ceiling to hold a recessed light, hidden above the drywall with only the trim visible below. It comes as a new-construction housing for open framing, a remodel housing for finished ceilings, and IC or non-IC types depending on insulation contact. What's the difference between new-construction and remodel recessed housings?

The difference is whether the ceiling is open or finished. A new-construction housing mounts to joists before the drywall goes up, using bar hangers that span the framing. A remodel (old-work) housing drops into a hole cut in a finished ceiling, gripping the drywall with spring clips. Use new-construction on bare framing, remodel when the ceiling is already closed.

What does IC-rated mean on a recessed housing?

IC-rated decides whether the housing can touch insulation. An IC-rated housing is sealed to sit in direct contact with insulation without overheating, required wherever insulation is present. A non-IC housing needs at least 3 inches of clearance from insulation to shed heat safely. In insulated ceilings, code requires an IC-rated, airtight housing — check the label before installing.

What size recessed housing do I need?

Size is set by the aperture — the opening you see below. 4-inch and 6-inch are the most common, with 6-inch giving broad general light and 4-inch a tighter accent. 2-inch and 3-inch suit trim, focused applications. The housing and trim must share the same aperture size to fit. Match the size to the room and the spacing between fixtures.

How do the housing, trim, and light engine work together?

Three parts make one recessed light. The housing is the hidden can that mounts in the ceiling and holds the wiring. The trim is the visible ring or reflector that finishes the opening. The light engine or module is the LED source that clips inside. Match all three by size and series — a housing takes a specific trim and engine, not any combination.

Do I need a recessed housing, or is a canless downlight better?
