Choose Hardware by the Installation, Not Appearance

Start with the surface and supported component: wood, steel, concrete, masonry, drywall, raceway, cable, box, fixture, or enclosure. Then confirm the load, attachment dimensions, environmental exposure, and manufacturer requirements. Similar-looking hardware can have very different capacities and approved applications.

Anchors: Match Substrate and Load

Choose anchors from the manufacturer's approved substrate and load information. Drill diameter, embedment, spacing, edge distance, installation torque, and substrate condition can affect performance. Color should not be used as a universal sizing or capacity code.

Screws and Bolts: Match Thread, Length, and Material

For screws and bolts, confirm thread type, diameter, length, head style, drive, finish, and material. When a fastener performs a grounding, equipment-support, or listed-assembly function, use hardware specifically identified for that application.

Straps and Supports Carry Raceway or Cable Loads

Compare straps and supports by raceway or cable type, trade size, mounting surface, required load, environment, and the support rules for the wiring method. Do not copy support spacing from one raceway or cable type to another.

Cable Ties Need Real Ratings Too

For bundling and organization, use cable ties whose tensile strength, temperature range, flame or plenum suitability, material, and UV or outdoor rating match the application. Black color alone does not establish UV suitability.

Hardware and Fastener FAQs

Does anchor color tell me the size or capacity?

Only if the manufacturer uses color coding for that specific product line. Verify the printed size and installation data.

Are black cable ties automatically UV-rated?

No. Outdoor or UV suitability must be stated in the product specifications.

Can any screw be used as a grounding screw?

No. Use hardware specifically identified for the grounding application and follow the equipment or connector instructions.
