What's the difference between an in-use cover and a standard weatherproof cover?
The difference is whether a cord can stay plugged in. A standard cover seals only when nothing is connected — flip it open to use the outlet, and it's exposed. A while-in-use (bubble) cover stays closed and sealed over a plugged-in cord, keeping rain out continuously. In-use covers are the outdoor standard for any receptacle that powers something full-time.
When does code require a while-in-use (bubble) cover?
Any receptacle exposed to weather needs one. The NEC requires a while-in-use cover on 15- and 20-amp receptacles in wet locations — outdoor walls, decks, rooftops, and other rain-exposed spots. A damp location (covered porch, soffit) can use a self-closing cover that seals when idle. When in doubt, a while-in-use cover satisfies both.
How do I choose the right cover configuration?
Three things define the right cover. Match the gang count to the box — one-gang for a single device, two-gang for a double. Match the cutout to the device — duplex, GFCI/decora, or a round or toggle opening. Pick the mount orientation, horizontal or vertical, to suit the box position. The cover must fit the box and the device together.
Should I use a metal or plastic weatherproof cover?
Both are weatherproof; the choice is durability and look. A metal (die-cast aluminum) cover resists impact and UV and suits commercial or exposed installs. A plastic (PVC or polycarbonate) cover won't corrode and costs less, common on residential exteriors. Match the cover material to the box — metal cover on a metal box, nonmetallic on a PVC box.
What size or depth of in-use cover do I need?
Depth is the spec people miss. A shallow cover (about 2 inches deep) fits a standard plug; a deep or extra-deep cover (up to 3-plus inches) clears a bulky GFCI plug, timer, or right-angle adapter. Measure the largest plug that will stay connected and choose a depth that closes over it. Too shallow and the lid won't seal.
