Set-Screw or Compression Is a Location Decision, Not a Price One

Almost every EMT fitting question comes down to one choice, and it is routinely decided on price when it belongs to location. The two styles do different jobs, and the cheaper one in the wrong place is a rework item rather than a saving.

What EMT Is, and What These Fittings Do

Electrical metallic tubing is thin-wall steel raceway. Unlike rigid conduit it is not threaded, so every connection to a box and every joint between lengths depends entirely on a fitting to make both the mechanical hold and, on a metal system, the equipment grounding path.

That second job is the one people forget. On an EMT system the raceway itself is frequently the equipment grounding conductor, so a loose or corroded fitting is a break in the ground path, not just a mechanical problem. Set-Screw Fittings

A set-screw fitting slides over the tubing and is clamped by one or two screws bearing on the outside wall. It is fast, inexpensive, and entirely adequate for dry indoor commercial work.

Its limit is sealing. A set screw makes a mechanical grip and nothing more, so the joint is not raintight and moisture entering the raceway has a path in.

Compression Fittings

A compression fitting uses a gland nut that squeezes a ring around the tubing, closing the gap between the fitting and the raceway wall. That produces a joint suited to concrete encasement, and the raintight versions in this range exist for exposed and wet locations.

The situations that call for compression are specific: raceway cast into concrete, damp interiors, exterior runs, and anywhere the specification says raintight. Compression costs more and installs slightly slower, and on a wet or buried run there is no substitute.

Steel, Die-Cast, or Malleable Iron

Body material affects durability more than price. A steel fitting resists impact in industrial areas, a die-cast zinc fitting is lighter and cheaper for general commercial work, and malleable iron appears in the clamps and heavier support hardware. Insulated Throat and Protecting the Conductors

The cut end of EMT is sharp, and conductors pulled past it drag across a metal edge. An insulated throat connector has a molded ring inside the opening that gives the conductors a smooth surface to bear on, and many specifications now call for it as standard. Connectors, Couplings, and Transitions

A connector terminates a tubing run into a box or enclosure and has a threaded end that takes a locknut on the inside. A coupling joins two lengths of tubing to each other and has no box side at all. A run of any length needs both, and couplings are the part crews most often under-order.

Two shape variants solve layout problems. An offset connector steps the tubing over to meet a knockout that does not line up with the run, and a 90 degree elbow turns a corner where field bending is impractical, particularly in the larger trade sizes.

Transition fittings are the third family and the least known. A combination EMT to MC connector lands armored cable and tubing at one opening, and a rigid to EMT combination coupling joins a threaded rigid section to unthreaded tubing, each made and marked for the specific pair it bridges.

Trade Size and What It Is Not

EMT is ordered by trade size, and the number is a designation rather than a measurement. Half inch EMT does not measure half an inch in either outside or inside diameter, and its actual internal area is what matters for conduit fill.

Two things follow. The fitting must match the tubing trade size exactly. And the raceway size itself is set by a fill calculation based on the conductors going through it, not by what fits physically. Bonding, Support, and Installation

Because EMT commonly serves as the equipment grounding path, every fitting has to be made up tight, and connections through concentric or eccentric knockouts often require a bonding bushing or jumper rather than relying on the locknut alone. That requirement is easy to miss and is a routine inspection finding.

Support is the other routine finding, since EMT has published maximum spacing between supports and a maximum distance from each box or fitting.
