EMT tubing can't connect to anything on its own - every box termination and every joint in the run needs a fitting. Connectors land the tube on a box or enclosure; couplings splice two lengths together. The fitting also sets the connection method: a set screw for dry indoor runs, or compression for a tighter, raintight grip outdoors. What's the difference between an EMT connector and a coupling?

Two different jobs. A connector terminates a length of EMT to a box, panel, or enclosure, with a threaded hub and locknut on the box side. A coupling joins two lengths of EMT end to end to extend a run. Both come in set-screw and compression styles for the conditions.

Set-screw or compression — which EMT fitting should I use?

Set-screw is the everyday choice for dry, indoor runs — a screw clamps the tube, fast and cheap. Compression fittings use a ring and nut that grip harder and resist pull-out and moisture, so they're specified for damp, outdoor, and concrete-embedded work. Where water can reach the joint, compression is the rule.

Which EMT fittings are rated for wet or outdoor locations?

Look for the word raintight. A raintight compression connector or coupling seals the joint against driving rain and is required in wet and damp locations and outdoor conduit runs. Set-screw fittings are not raintight and belong indoors, in dry areas only. Concrete-embedded runs also call for concrete-tight fittings.

How do I transition EMT to MC cable or rigid conduit?

You don't force them together — you use a transition fitting made for the pair. An EMT-to-MC (combination) connector lands armored cable and EMT in one box knockout. A rigid-to-EMT (combination) coupling joins threaded rigid conduit to EMT. Each is listed for the two raceways it bridges, keeping the run continuous and grounded.

What is an offset connector or EMT elbow for?

Both handle changes in direction. An offset connector steps the EMT down to meet a box knockout that doesn't line up with the run, removing the need to bend the tube. An EMT elbow (90-degree fitting) turns a corner where field-bending is impractical, especially in larger trade sizes. Both save bending time on tight layouts.

What sizes and materials do EMT fittings come in?

EMT fittings run from 1/2 inch up to 4 inches, matching standard EMT trade sizes — 1/2 and 3/4 inch are the most common. The body is usually die-cast zinc or steel; steel and malleable iron suit heavier commercial and industrial work. Match the fitting size and finish to the conduit and the environment.
