A ceiling fan rarely fails all at once. It starts clicking on high, develops a wobble that rattles the light glass, or ignores its remote on the first hot day of the year. Most of those problems trace back to a short list: no power reaching the fan, a failed control such as a pull chain switch or remote receiver, a reverse switch left between positions, a worn capacitor, loose hardware, or unbalanced blades. Work from the simplest check to the most involved, and match the symptom to the likely cause before taking anything apart.
Turn off the circuit breaker, not just the wall switch, before opening the canopy or switch housing, and confirm the wires are dead with a non-contact voltage tester followed by a contact tester. Ceiling Fan Not Working? Check Power and Controls First
When a ceiling fan will not turn on at all, the fault is usually in the power supply or the controls rather than the motor. Check these in order.
- Check the breaker and every switch. Reset a tripped breaker once, turn on the wall switch, and pull the fan chain through each position. If the breaker trips again, leave it off and find the cause first.
- Test the remote. Replace the batteries. On a fan with both pull chains and an added remote, set the fan pull chain to high so the receiver can control every speed.
- Seat the reverse switch. Push the direction switch firmly to one side. A switch resting in the middle can keep the motor from running.
- Spin the blades by hand. With the fan off, the blades should turn freely. Resistance or scraping points to something rubbing or a motor problem.
- Inspect the connections. With the breaker off, lower the canopy, confirm every splice is tight, and check that the plug in the switch housing is fully seated. - Confirm power at the fan. If the connections look good but the fan still gets nothing, no voltage at the wall switch with the breaker on is a building wiring problem for a licensed electrician.

Light Works but the Fan Won't Spin
A working light proves power is reaching the fan, so the fault sits in the fan circuit. Check the reverse switch and fan pull chain first. If the motor still does nothing, the usual suspects are the capacitor, the remote receiver, or the fan's internal wiring harness, all model specific parts ordered by the fan's model number.
How to Fix a Broken Ceiling Fan Pull Chain
A broken pull chain has two possible fixes. If enough chain remains below the switch housing to grip and the switch still changes positions, a pull chain connector can rejoin the pieces. If the chain broke inside the housing, or the switch no longer changes speeds, replace the switch.
Speed switches differ in terminal layout and internal switching sequence, so a switch that fits is not always a switch that works. With the breaker off, open the switch housing, photograph or label each wire against its terminal marking, commonly L for the line and 1, 2, and 3 for the speeds, and buy a replacement that matches the old switch's terminal count, markings, and rating. Fan Runs Slowly or Only on One Speed
A fan that runs on high but not on medium or low usually has a failing capacitor. Most AC ceiling fans use a capacitor to set their separate speed steps, so a weak one can leave the fan stuck on one speed or changing speeds unpredictably.
Before ordering a capacitor, rule out the simpler causes: a reverse switch that is not fully engaged, a remote or wall control problem, or a control not designed for fan motors. Why Is My Ceiling Fan Making Noise?
The kind of noise points to the cause. Clicking and rattling usually come from loose hardware, humming and buzzing from the control or motor, and grinding or scraping from parts rubbing or a motor problem.
Clicking, ticking, or rattling. Tighten the blade screws, the screws holding the blade holders to the motor, the light kit and its glass, and the canopy. Normal operation loosens hardware over time, so a new rattle in an older fan is a reason to check screws before suspecting the motor.
Humming or buzzing. Check the wall control first. A standard light dimmer is not a fan speed control, and Section 404.14(E) of the 2023 National Electrical Code limits general-use dimmers to permanently installed incandescent luminaires unless the dimmer is listed for other loads. The 2026 edition moves that rule to Article 406 without changing it. Replace an incorrect control with a fan speed control designed for ceiling fans.
Grinding or scraping. Turn the fan off and look for a blade holder, light kit, or canopy touching a moving part. If nothing is rubbing and the noise follows the motor's rotation, have the motor checked; when a motor has truly failed, replacing the fan is usually more practical than repairing it.

How to Fix a Wobbly Ceiling Fan
Most wobble comes from loose screws, uneven dust, or warped blades, and a balancing kit corrects what tightening and cleaning do not. Turn the fan off between checks, then test each change on high speed.
- Check the mount. Lower the canopy and confirm the mounting bracket is tight and the box above it does not move.
- Tighten all hardware. Snug the screws at the mounting plate, downrod, set screw, blade holders, blades, and light kit.
- Clean every blade evenly. Uneven dust can throw off balance, so wipe each blade completely while supporting it from below.
- Look for warped or drooping blades. Sight down each blade edge toward the motor; any curve means the blade is warped, and a warped blade can only be replaced, not balanced. - Balance the blades. Clip the balancing kit's clip to one blade at a time and run the fan to find the blade that reduces wobble most, slide the clip along that blade to the best spot, then stick a weight in line with the clip and remove it.

If the fan moves at the ceiling, stop using it. Balancing fixes blade weight, not a loose box. Under Section 314.27(C) of the 2023 NEC, an outlet box used as the sole support for a ceiling fan must be listed and marked for fan support, can support no more than 70 pounds, and must be marked with its maximum weight for fans over 35 pounds; the 2026 edition renumbers the rule as 314.27(B). Ceiling Fan Light Not Working
If the fan runs but the light does not, work from the bulb back toward the wiring: bulb type and wattage, the light pull chain or light control, the wattage limiter, and finally the light kit connections.
Replace the bulb with one that fits the socket and the kit's rating, and look for burn marks in the socket, which point to a wiring problem. Fans with candelabra or other small socket light kits built from 2009 into early 2020 may contain a wattage limiter. Under the federal standard for ceiling fan light kits, kits with sockets other than medium screw base or fluorescent pin sockets made on or after January 1, 2009 could not operate with more than 190 watts of bulbs, until newer standards took effect on January 21, 2020. Ceiling Fan Remote Not Working
A remote that stops working usually needs new batteries, a matching code, or pairing again, and less often a new receiver. The receiver needs power, so confirm the wall switch feeding the fan is on. Older remotes use tiny DIP switches that must be set identically in the remote and in the receiver inside the canopy, while newer remotes pair electronically through the sequence in the manual. Should You Repair or Replace a Ceiling Fan?
Loose hardware, dead batteries, wobble, pull chain switches, capacitors, and receivers are usually worth repairing. A burning smell from the motor, a cracked housing, or repeated electrical faults point toward replacement, and a failed motor usually means a new fan.
