Single-Pole, Three-Way, and Four-Way Switches
A single-pole switch controls one light or load from a single location and is the switch found in most rooms, with two brass terminals plus a ground screw, typically rated 15 or 20 amps at 120 to 277 volts. A three-way switch controls one light from two separate locations, such as both ends of a hallway or staircase, using three terminals, one common and two travelers, and always installed in matched pairs so either switch can turn the light on or off. A four-way switch adds a third or later control point to that same circuit, wired between the two three-way switches rather than replacing either of them.

A double-pole switch controls 240-volt circuits and higher-current equipment that a single-pole switch isn't rated for. It carries four terminals plus a ground, breaks both hot legs at once, and commonly serves motors, water heaters, and other 240-volt commercial loads in ratings up to 30 amps.
How a Three-Way Switch Actually Works
An SPST, or single-pole single-throw, switch makes one on or off connection to a single circuit, which is what a standard light switch does. An SPDT, or single-pole double-throw, switch routes one input to either of two outputs, and that's exactly how a three-way switch selects between its two traveler wires. Each time a three-way switch is flipped, its common terminal connects to one of the two travelers, and because both switches on the circuit share those same traveler wires, either one can complete or break the connection independently. A three-way switch can also be wired to work as a single-pole switch, by connecting line and load to the common terminal and one traveler and leaving the second traveler unused, though the toggle direction may read reversed when wired this way.
Finishing the Installation
