What types of fan controls are there?

Fan controls split by the fan they run. A fan speed control sets a ceiling fan's speed from the wall, stepped or full-range. A fan-and-light control runs the fan and its light on one device. A fan timer counts down a ventilation fan's runtime, and a humidity sensor switches a bath fan on automatically. Pick by fan type and what you need to adjust.

Can I use a regular dimmer to control a ceiling fan?

No — and it can damage the motor. A standard light dimmer chops the waveform in a way a fan motor can't handle, causing humming, overheating, or failure. A fan speed control is built for inductive motor loads, varying speed safely. Always use a control rated for ceiling fans, never a lamp dimmer, on a fan circuit.

What's the difference between a fan speed control and a fan/light control?

One runs the fan; the other runs both. A fan speed control adjusts only the fan motor's speed, for a fan with no light or a separately switched light. A fan-and-light control handles the fan speed and the light's dimming from a single wall plate, often with separate buttons or sliders. Choose fan/light when one box feeds both.

How does a bathroom fan timer or humidity sensor work?

A timer counts down; a humidistat senses moisture. A fan timer runs the exhaust fan for a set period — 10, 20, 30, or 60 minutes — then shuts it off, clearing moisture after a shower. A humidity-sensing switch turns the fan on when it detects rising humidity and off when the air dries. Both prevent mold without leaving the fan running.

Do fan speed controls work with any ceiling fan?

Most do, but DC-motor fans are the exception. A standard fan speed control works with AC-motor ceiling fans, the common type. A DC-motor fan uses its own receiver and remote, so a wall speed control won't vary it — use the maker's control instead. Confirm the fan's motor type before pairing a wall control.
