What is an LED area light (shoebox light)?

An LED area light, also called a shoebox light, is a pole-mounted fixture that lights parking lots, roadways, and open areas from above. Its rectangular housing and downward photometric distribution spread even light across a wide surface. Most mount on square or round poles at 15 to 40 feet.

What's the difference between an area light, flood light, and wall pack?

Each lights a different zone. An area light mounts on a pole and covers a parking lot or open field from above. A flood light aims an adjustable beam at a target like a sign or facade. A wall pack mounts on a building wall and lights the perimeter below.

What is a Type III, IV, or V light distribution?

Distribution describes how a fixture spreads light. Type III throws light forward and to the sides for roadways and parking-lot perimeters. Type IV projects a wide forward beam for building entries and walls. Type V casts a square or round pattern evenly in all directions for open lots and intersections.

What mounting options do area lights have?

Area lights mount to the pole four main ways. A slip-fitter clamps onto a 2-3/8-inch tenon. A direct-arm mount bolts flat to a square pole. A trunnion or yoke tilts the fixture. A round-pole adapter fits a curved pole surface.

What wattage LED area light replaces my metal halide?

Match LED wattage to the HID fixture and pole height, not watt for watt. A 150W LED replaces a 400W metal halide. A 300W LED replaces a 1000W metal halide. Compare lumens, not watts — area lights range from 15,000 to 45,000 lumens.
