Building a 12V Run: Sizing the Transformer, Then Picking Fixtures and Lamps

Every product on this page runs on 12 volts. That single fact controls the whole job. You are not buying a fixture, you are buying a system with three parts that have to agree with each other. A transformer steps 120V down. A run of fixtures has to fit inside that transformer’s capacity. And in many cases a separate lamp goes into the fixture. Get any one of the three wrong and the run either will not light, will light dim at the far end, or will fail early.

Start with the transformer, not the fixture

ABBA's 31 transformers span 3W to 1200W, and the number in the part is the wattage. TSR1200 is 1200W, TSR900 is 900W, TSRPT300 is 300W, TSDC48 is 48W. Add up the wattage of every fixture on the run, leave headroom, and pick a unit above that total. Most ABBA fixtures draw between 2W and 12W, with 3W the single most common rating, so a mid-size residential run adds up faster in fixture count than in watts. AC and DC units are not interchangeable

Seventeen of the 31 transformers are AC output and 14 are DC. The DC units are the TSDC, TSDCS, TSDCT, TSDLCD and MX24 families, and several of them output 24V rather than 12V. An AC fixture on a DC supply, or a 12V fixture on a 24V supply, is a failed install, not a compatibility inconvenience. Confirm the output type on both the transformer and the fixture before you pair them.

Multi-tap output solves voltage drop

The manual stainless units in the TSR and TSRPT families offer multi-tap output, which means the transformer carries several output terminals at different voltages: 12V, 13V, 14V and 15V. That is not a feature, it is the fix for a long cable run. Voltage drops over distance, so a fixture 150 feet out fed from the 12V tap arrives under-volted and reads dim and yellow. Move that leg to the 14V or 15V tap and it lands closer to 12V at the fixture. Measure at the fixture rather than guessing at the tap.

Control is built in on some units

Several ABBA transformers include a timer, and the digital stainless STS models list selectable 12V to 15V output with WiFi scheduling on the STS300 and STS150. If your transformer does not include control, dusk to dawn switching comes from a photocell and scheduling comes from a timer, both of which Lumera stocks separately under photocells.

The fixture types and what each one is for

Seven types carry the bulk of the range. Matching lamps to the fixtures that take them

This is where ABBA orders go wrong most often. Of the 345 fixtures, 123 take a replaceable lamp and the remaining 222 are integrated. The lamped ones split into 66 that take MR16, 46 that take G4, four that take PAR36, four that take MR11 and three that take E27. If the fixture takes a lamp and you do not order one, a box of housings arrives and nothing lights.

Decoding an ABBA part number

Be careful with the fixture prefixes. Unlike a manufacturer with one clean scheme, ABBA uses several prefixes for the same job. Path lights appear as PLB, PL, CDPA and CDPS. Well lights appear as UNB, UNS, UNF, DM, DMS and CRG. Step lights appear as STA and STB. Reading the prefix alone will mislead you, so trust the product type on the listing.

Two parts of the number are reliable. On transformers the leading letters identify the output family and the trailing digits state the wattage, so TSR1200 reads as a manual multi-tap unit at 1200W.

Can I run ABBA fixtures on another manufacturer's transformer?

Usually yes, as long as the output type and voltage match, since 12V low-voltage landscape is a common standard. The failure cases are specific: a DC-only fixture on an AC transformer, a 12V fixture on a 24V output, or a fixture on a magnetic transformer that expects an electronic one. Match output type first and capacity second.

Why do the fixtures at the end of my run look dim?

That is voltage drop, and it is a wire and distance problem rather than a fixture defect. The remedy on this range is the multi-tap output on the manual TSR and TSRPT transformers.
