Add the fan motor and a light to a combination unit and the total climbs further. That's why virtually every manufacturer specifies a dedicated 20-amp circuit for a fan-heater combo, and why you cannot simply put one on the existing bathroom lighting circuit. The manufacturer's instructions are not a suggestion here: the National Electrical Code requires listed equipment to be installed according to its listing and labeling, so if the box says dedicated 20-amp, that is the code requirement.
In practice, this means a new home run from the panel, a spare breaker slot, and enough capacity in the panel to accept it. Budget for that before you fall in love with a particular unit. If your panel is already full, this project may be the one that pushes you toward a service upgrade.

The Case for a Combination Fan Heater
A combo unit puts ventilation, heat, and often a light behind one grille, which is its main appeal. You cut one hole in the ceiling instead of two, you run one circuit instead of two, and in a small or mid-size bathroom with limited wall space, that simplicity is hard to beat. Most models let you run the fan, heater, and light independently from separate switches, so you're not forced to heat the room every time you ventilate it.
The compromises are worth understanding. Heat radiating down from the ceiling is less comfortable than heat at body level, especially in a larger room. The heater's blower makes noise, so a combo is never the quiet option while heating. And because everything is in one housing, a failure in any component often means replacing the whole assembly.
The Case for a Separate Heater
Splitting the jobs lets each device do its own well. You can pair a genuinely quiet ventilation fan with a heater sized and positioned for the room, and if one fails you replace only that piece. There are three common approaches:
- Fan-forced wall heater: mounted low on a wall, it warms the whole room quickly by circulating air, and it's the most common dedicated choice. It does make blower noise while running.
- Radiant or infrared heater: warms people and surfaces directly rather than heating the air, so it feels warm almost instantly and runs silently. Excellent aimed at a vanity or the area outside the shower.
- In-floor electric heat: the premium option. Warm tile underfoot is a genuinely different experience, but it belongs to a tile remodel rather than a weekend upgrade, and it heats slowly, so it usually runs on a programmable thermostat.

The working rule for electric resistance heat is about 10 watts per square foot of floor area for a reasonably insulated room. A 60-square-foot bathroom lands around 600 watts, and a 100-square-foot bathroom around 1,000. Push that to 12 to 15 watts per square foot if the room has high ceilings, poor insulation, several exterior walls, or a large window, or if you live somewhere with hard winters.

Look for units listed by a recognized testing laboratory such as UL or ETL for the intended location, and confirm the manufacturer's clearances to combustibles, curtains, and towels. Bathroom receptacles must be GFCI protected under the code, and connecting the GFCI protection and heater circuit correctly is part of a compliant install. One practical middle path: install a good quiet fan now, run the wiring and a box for a wall heater while the walls are open, and add the heater later. Rough-in is cheap; retrofitting is not.
