These two devices look almost identical on a ceiling, and plenty of people assume one covers both jobs. It doesn't. A smoke alarm senses the particles produced by a fire. A carbon monoxide alarm senses a poisonous gas you cannot see, smell, or taste. They protect against completely different threats, they belong in different places, they sound different alarms, and they wear out on different schedules. Owning one does not protect you from the other, which is why nearly every modern code requires both, and why hardwired interconnected alarms now appear on almost every electrician's rough-in list alongside the electrical boxes and devices they mount to. What Each One Actually Detects
Smoke alarms
A smoke alarm watches for the airborne products of combustion. It's your early warning that a fire has started, often minutes before flames become visible or heat becomes noticeable. Those minutes are the entire point: the National Fire Protection Association reports that roughly three out of five home fire deaths happen in homes with no working smoke alarms.
Carbon monoxide alarms
Carbon monoxide is produced whenever fuel burns incompletely, and it is genuinely invisible: no color, no odor, no taste. That's why it's often called the silent killer. Your body absorbs it in place of oxygen, and the early symptoms (headache, dizziness, nausea, weakness, confusion) feel like the flu without a fever, which is exactly why people go to sleep and don't wake up. The CDC attributes more than 400 deaths and roughly 100,000 emergency room visits a year in the U.S. to unintentional, non-fire CO poisoning. A CO alarm is the only way to know it's there.
Common sources include furnaces, water heaters, gas ranges and ovens, fireplaces, blocked chimneys and flues, attached garages, and, most dangerously, portable generators run in or near an enclosed space.
Know the Beeps: Three Versus Four
This is the single most practical thing to take away, and most guides bury it. The two alarms use standardized, deliberately different patterns so you know what you're running from.
- Three beeps, pause, repeat: smoke. There is a fire. Get everyone out, stay out, and call 911 from outside.
- Four beeps, pause, repeat: carbon monoxide. Get everyone into fresh air immediately, call 911, and do not go back inside until responders clear the building.
- A single chirp every minute or so: not an emergency. That's a low battery or an end-of-life warning telling you to replace the battery or the unit.
The response is different in each case, and confusing the two costs time you may not have. It's worth teaching the patterns to everyone in the household, children included.

Sensor Types Matter (Especially for Smoke)
Not all smoke alarms detect all fires equally well, which surprises most people.
- Ionization sensors respond faster to fast-flaming fires, the kind that erupt from paper or grease.
- Photoelectric sensors respond faster to smoldering fires, the slow, smoky kind that start in upholstery or from a cigarette and produce the most deadly smoke while people sleep.
- Dual-sensor alarms combine both, which is why fire safety authorities recommend either dual-sensor units or a mix of both types throughout the home. Relying on only one technology leaves a real gap.
Carbon monoxide alarms are simpler on this front: the electrochemical sensor is the standard, and it's both the most accurate and the longest-lived option.

Placement: The Rules Are Different
Smoke alarms
Smoke rises, so mount alarms on the ceiling, or high on a wall within about 12 inches of the ceiling. Install one on every level of the home including the basement, inside every bedroom, and outside each separate sleeping area. Keep them at least 10 feet from cooking appliances to cut down on nuisance alarms, and avoid bathrooms, where steam triggers false trips. Steer clear of supply vents and ceiling fans, whose airflow can push smoke away from the sensor.
Carbon monoxide alarms
CO mixes fairly evenly with air rather than sinking or rising, so most manufacturers allow mounting at any height, though you should always follow the instructions that came with your specific unit. Install one on every level and outside each sleeping area, and keep them roughly 15 to 20 feet away from fuel-burning appliances so normal startup emissions don't cause nuisance alarms. Don't tuck them behind furniture or curtains, where air can't circulate.

Power and Interconnection
Alarms come hardwired with battery backup, battery-only (increasingly with 10-year sealed lithium batteries), or plug-in. Hardwired units with battery backup are the standard in new construction and remodels for good reason: they can't be defeated by a dead battery, and they keep working in a power outage. Whichever you choose, interconnection is the feature that saves lives. When alarms are interconnected, whether by wire or wirelessly, one triggering sounds them all, so a basement fire wakes someone sleeping upstairs. Hardwired interconnected systems are wired through the home's branch circuits, which means wire connectors and a properly protected circuit at the panel are part of the job.

Should You Buy a Combination Alarm?
Combination smoke and CO alarms put both sensors in one housing. They save wall space, simplify installation, and mean one device to test and maintain, and they're a perfectly good choice for most homes. The trade-offs are worth knowing. Placement becomes a compromise, since the ideal spot for a smoke sensor isn't always ideal for a CO sensor. And when either sensor reaches end of life, you replace the whole unit. If you want to optimize placement precisely, separate alarms give you more control.
Certification and Replacement
Buy only alarms certified by a recognized testing lab: UL 217 for smoke, UL 2034 for carbon monoxide, or the equivalent ETL listing. Consumer testing organizations have repeatedly found uncertified CO detectors sold through online marketplaces that fail to alarm at dangerous gas levels, and a detector that doesn't detect is worse than none, because it creates false confidence.
Alarms also expire. Sensors degrade, and this is not optional maintenance.
- Smoke alarms: replace the entire unit 10 years from the date of manufacture printed on the back.
- CO alarms: typically 5 to 10 years depending on the model, so check the label. CO sensors generally have a shorter service life than smoke sensors.
- Combination units: usually 10 years, and many now have an end-of-life chirp that tells you when they're done.
Simple Maintenance Routine
- Monthly: press the test button on every alarm.
- Yearly: replace the batteries, unless the unit has a sealed 10-year battery.
- Regularly: vacuum dust from the vents, which is a common cause of both failures and false alarms.
- Check the date: look at the manufacture date on the back and diary the replacement year.
- Never disable an alarm to stop nuisance beeping. Use the hush button, move the alarm farther from the kitchen, or switch to a photoelectric sensor instead.

The Bottom Line
A smoke alarm and a carbon monoxide alarm are not interchangeable. One warns you about fire; the other warns you about a poison you have no way of sensing on your own.
