A suspended T-bar grid points strongly toward recessed drop-in panels, since they lay in effortlessly and look purpose-built. A solid concrete or masonry ceiling, or drywall with no accessible cavity, points to surface mount, because there's nowhere to recess into. A Third Option: Suspended
