Cat6 vs Cat7 vs Cat8: Do You Need It?
Walk down the Ethernet aisle and the numbers keep climbing: Cat6, Cat7, Cat8, each promising more bandwidth and higher speeds than the last. So the honest question is the one in the title: do you actually need the expensive, high-numbered cable? For the overwhelming majority of homes and most offices, the answer is no, because the cable is almost never the thing holding your network back. The Question That Actually Matters: Where's Your Bottleneck?
Before comparing categories, understand this: your network is only as fast as its slowest link, and that link is almost never the cable. Three things set your real ceiling. Your internet plan, most homes have 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps, with 2 to 5 Gbps only now emerging. Your devices' network ports, the vast majority of laptops, phones, TVs, and consoles top out at 1 Gbps or connect over Wi-Fi, and very few consumer devices even have a 10G port. And your switch and router, which cap the speed of everything passing through them.
A 40-gigabit Cat8 cable does absolutely nothing if every device on it maxes out at 1 gigabit. Buying Cat7 or Cat8 to “speed up your internet” is spending money on a bottleneck you don't have. The cable only matters once your devices, switch, and internet service can actually use more, and for most people that day is Cat6 or Cat6a territory, not Cat8.

Cat6: The Mainstream Default
Cat6 is the workhorse of home and office networking. Rated to 250 MHz, it carries gigabit to the full 100 meters, multigigabit (2.5G and 5G) to 100 meters, and 10 gigabit over shorter runs of about 55 meters. It uses standard RJ45 connectors, is inexpensive and easy to work with, and is backward compatible with everything. For the majority of homes and offices, whose devices and internet plans are nowhere near saturating it, Cat6 is genuinely more than enough.
Cat7: Skip It in North America
Cat7 is the category to be wary of, for a specific reason: it is not recognized by the TIA/EIA, the body that sets cabling standards in North America. It's an ISO/IEC standard instead, and to reach its full specification it requires proprietary GG45 or TERA connectors rather than standard RJ45. That creates a practical mess. Most “Cat7” cable sold to consumers is terminated with ordinary RJ45 plugs, which immediately drops it to Cat6a performance at best, so you're paying a premium for shielded cable and getting Cat6a results.
There's also no TIA-recognized Cat7 jack or patch panel, which means you cannot certify a compliant end-to-end channel under the standards that warranties, integrators, and insurance carriers reference. If an auditor asks for a certified channel, Cat7 with RJ45 can't produce one, and Cat6a can. Cat7 has a legitimate role in European installations built to ISO/IEC with proper GG45 infrastructure, but for North American work the verdict is simple: don't specify it, buy Cat6a instead.

Cat8: A Data-Center Cable
Cat8 is a genuine, powerful standard, just not one built for your house. Rated to a massive 2000 MHz, it supports 25 and even 40 gigabit over twisted pair, but with a hard catch: its maximum channel length is only about 30 meters (98 feet), after which performance drops. It was engineered for a single job, short, ultra-fast copper runs between top-of-rack switches and servers inside a data center or server room. For that job it's excellent. For a home, it's overkill and often impractical: no consumer device needs 25 or 40 gigabit, the 30-meter limit is short for whole-house runs, and the cable is thick, rigid, expensive, and demands properly grounded shielded terminations. It belongs in a rack, not in your walls.

Don't Forget Cat6a (the Cable You Probably Actually Want)
If you're future-proofing and want more than Cat6, the right step up is almost always Cat6a, not Cat7 or Cat8. Rated to 500 MHz, Cat6a carries a full 10 gigabit across the entire 100-meter channel over standard RJ45, it's a TIA-recognized standard you can certify, and it's widely considered the best choice for the great majority of homes and small businesses. The Shielding Catch
Cat7 and Cat8 are heavily shielded cables, and shielding is not a free upgrade. To actually work, a shielded cable must be bonded and grounded end to end with matching shielded connectors and jacks. Done improperly, the shield does nothing and can even introduce noise. Shielded cable is also thicker, stiffer, harder to route through walls with a larger bend radius, and more demanding to terminate, often requiring certified tools rather than a DIY crimp. In a typical home without a grounded shielded system, paying for shielded Cat7 or Cat8 usually buys installation headaches rather than performance. So, Do You Need Cat7 or Cat8?
- Home or apartment: no. Cat6 covers nearly everyone, and Cat6a future-proofs a permanent install for 10G. Skip Cat7 and Cat8.
- Office or small business: Cat6 for most, Cat6a where you want 10G to the desk. Cat7 and Cat8 aren't the general-purpose upgrade they look like.
- Noisy industrial or high-EMI space: a shielded Cat6a, properly grounded, rather than Cat7.
- Data center, short 25G or 40G switch-to-server runs: this is Cat8's actual home.
- European installation to ISO/IEC with GG45 hardware: Cat7 is legitimate there, but not in a TIA-based North American design.
