Understanding IP Ratings for Light Fixtures
An IP rating is a two digit code, defined by the international standard IEC 60529, that tells you exactly how well a light fixture keeps out solids like dust and liquids like rain. The first digit grades protection against solid objects on a scale of 0 to 6, the second grades protection against water on a scale of 0 to 9, so a fixture marked IP65 is completely dust tight and shrugs off water jets from any direction. Understanding IP ratings turns vague marketing words like weatherproof into a measurable spec you can hold a manufacturer to, which matters most when you are buying outdoor lighting that will face storms, sprinklers, and pressure washers for a decade. How to Read the Two Digits
IP stands for Ingress Protection, and the code always reads the same way: IP, then the solids digit, then the liquids digit. IP65 breaks down as 6 for dust tight and 5 for protected against water jets. When a manufacturer has only tested one kind of protection, the untested digit is replaced with an X, so IPX4 means the fixture passed a splash test but was never rated for dust. Higher numbers mean more protection within each digit, but the two digits are separate tests, a fixture can be excellent against water and mediocre against dust or the reverse, which is exactly why the code uses two numbers instead of one.

The First Digit: Dust and Solid Objects
The solids scale starts with protection people rarely think about, keeping fingers and tools away from live parts. A 1 blocks anything larger than the back of a hand, 2 blocks fingers, 3 blocks tools above 2.5 mm, and 4 blocks wires above 1 mm. The two values that matter for fixture buying are at the top: a 5 means dust protected, some dust can enter but never enough to interfere with operation, and a 6 means dust tight, with no ingress at all under vacuum testing. For interior living spaces the first digit barely matters. For barns, workshops, sawmills, grain facilities, and any fixture near grinding or cutting, the jump from 5 to 6 is the difference between a lens that slowly fills with haze and one that stays clear.

The Second Digit: Water, From Drips to Washdown
The liquids scale climbs through realistic kinds of exposure. A 1 or 2 survives dripping water, a 3 survives spray up to 60 degrees from vertical, and a 4 survives splashes from any direction, which is the level a covered porch or a bathroom fixture typically needs. A 5 withstands water jets from a nozzle, meaning rain, sprinklers, and garden hose cleaning, and a 6 withstands powerful jets and storm driven water. A 7 survives temporary immersion, 1 meter deep for 30 minutes, and an 8 survives continuous immersion at a depth the manufacturer specifies. The special value 9K, developed for vehicle and food industry washdown, certifies against close range, high pressure, high temperature spray. No fixture needs the top of the scale everywhere, the skill is matching the digit to what the location will actually throw at it.

Matching Ratings to Real Locations
For fully exposed exterior fixtures, the ones rain hits directly, treat IP65 as the working baseline. That covers the wall packs on a building perimeter, flood lights on poles and facades, and area lights over parking. Step up to IP66 where wind drives rain horizontally, where fixtures get pressure washed, or on coastal and high storm sites. Anything mounted at or in the ground plays by harder rules, because water pools there: in-grade well lights and fixtures in low spots should carry IP67, and anything actually submerged in a fountain or pond needs IP68 with a depth rating that matches the installation. Indoors the demands drop fast: IP20 is fine for living rooms and offices, and bathroom fixtures such as vanity lights near a sink or tub are well served by IP44, with higher ratings reserved for fixtures inside a shower zone.

IP Ratings vs UL Dry, Damp, and Wet Location Listings
Here is the part American buyers need that most IP guides skip: an IP rating is not what a US electrical inspector looks for. Inspectors and the National Electrical Code work from the fixture's location listing, the UL or ETL mark that certifies it as suitable for dry, damp, or wet locations, and plenty of fixtures sold in the US carry a wet location listing with no IP number printed anywhere. The two systems overlap but measure different things: the IP code is a pure ingress test of the enclosure, while the location listing is a safety certification of the whole fixture operating in that environment. In practice, use them together. The location listing tells you the fixture is legal for the spot, and the IP rating tells you how much physical abuse from dust and water the housing itself can absorb. A commercial spec that says wet location listed and IP65 minimum is asking for both, and that is the right way to write it.

What an IP Rating Does Not Tell You
The code answers exactly one question, what gets inside, and stays silent on everything else that kills outdoor fixtures. It says nothing about UV resistance, so a lens can yellow and embrittle in the sun while its seal stays perfect. It says nothing about corrosion, and a coastal salt atmosphere will eat an unfinished housing regardless of the digits. Impact resistance lives in a separate IK code, temperature range and driver quality live on the data sheet, and gaskets age no matter what they passed on test day. So read the IP rating as one line of the spec, then check housing material, finish, listing, operating temperature, and warranty before the rating convinces you the fixture is bulletproof.

Fixtures vs Enclosures: Same Code, Different Job

The Word Waterproof Is Marketing, the Digits Are the Spec
No standard defines waterproof, so the word on a box can mean anything from splash resistant to submersible, and disappointed buyers usually find out which in the first winter. The honest translation is that IP65 and IP66 are rainproof and hose proof, IP67 tolerates a brief dunk, and only IP68 is built to live underwater. When a product page says waterproof, scroll until you find the digits, and if there are no digits and no wet location listing, assume the fixture belongs indoors.

The Bottom Line
An IP rating is two separate scores, solids first and water second, and reading them takes ten seconds once you know the scale. Use IP20 gear indoors, IP44 under cover and around bathroom water, IP65 as the floor for anything rain touches, IP66 where water arrives with force, IP67 at grade level, IP68 underwater, and IP69K in washdown plants.
